Congressional Appropriation Request for FY 2010

Federal transit funding is provided annually through appropriations approved by Congress. This funding is provided to the United States Department of Transportation for distribution to transit agencies each fiscal year and includes funding for specific capital project needs.
Congress will soon begin the federal budget process for the upcoming federal fiscal year (2010) that starts on Oct. 1, 2009.  While KCATA will continue to explore opportunities for future major service expansions, the need to sustain basic services and maintain existing facilities is KCATA’s highest priority for 2010 federal discretionary capital funding.  Accordingly, the following are KCATA’s recommended Congressional priorities for FY 2010:

  • $6 million in transit capital funds for new buses. KCATA has an ongoing need to replace buses that have exceeded their useful life. Currently, more than 30 buses are in need of replacement and federal funding is critically needed.
  • $2 million for transit maintenance facility improvements. KCATA’s 32-year-old central service facility is also in need of improvement. One of the greatest facility improvements needed is replacement of the 20-year-old bus washer with a new, more efficient system.
