Metro Consolidates Bus Stops For Faster Service

Posted on: Apr 19, 2012 - 08:12 AM
Effective: Apr 19, 2012

The Metro has implemented the first round of route changes for the Metro2012 service changes, and preparations are underway for greater changes in July. Along with changes to routes and scheduled times, The Metro is consolidating some bus stops to improve service on several Metro routes. These changes will help Metro buses keep on schedule, allow for faster travel times and reduce wear and tear on buses.

On streets that run east and west in Kansas City, Mo., bus stops will be available at every other block. Bus stops were removed based on the number of people boarding at each stop. If a stop has been removed, there should be another Metro stop a block away.

Extra stops have already been removed along the 27-27th Street and 31-31st Street routes. The Metro will soon begin consolidating stops on the following routes: 24-Indepenence, 30-Northeast, 35-35th Street, 39-39th Street, 108-Indiana, and 121-Cleveland-Antioch.

This change is part of the Metro2012 service changes. These changes are intended to create service that is more efficient and more attractive to customers.  To learn more about the changes coming this year, visit http://www.kcata.org and look for “Metro2012.”

Route Changes
Study Overview

March 24, 2012

Dear Metro Customer,

It’s been two years in the making and we are now ready to roll out an entire package of route and schedule changes to offer you more reliable, more convenient, more direct service – without increasing the budget. Like other metropolitan cities, Kansas City continues to experience dramatic shifts in population and employment that impact the demand for transit service. The time was ripe to fully assess our system and identify ways to be more efficient and user-friendly.

Nelson Nygaard, a leading Boston-based transit planning firm, was hired to work alongside our experienced planning and transportation staff. Their impressive credentials made them a perfect fit for evaluating 54 Kansas City, Mo., routes.

From start to finish we welcomed your input. Early on we asked your preferences. Do you prefer more frequent service and shorter hours of operation? Or do you prefer more evening and weekend trips and less service during the day? In the fall of last year, we published initial route recommendations and asked you to weigh in on the proposals. We received an amazing 700 comments, analyzed each and every one of them, and revised 24 of the original recommendations. Clearly, you have had a strong hand in the changes to come.

Now we’re ready to roll out the first package April 1. After that, changes will be phased in more aggressively over the next 12 months.

Please be proactive in finding out the latest route and schedule changes. We have worked very hard to coordinate changes in the most logical and efficient manner, minimizing your inconvenience and maximizing your opportunities. Everything will be online at http://www.kcata.org and we will be setting up special information sites where you can actually pick up the new “preliminary” schedule well before implementation.

Please accept my thanks for your active role in helping us improve our system. I look forward to your future ridership and continued feedback.

Yours In Transit,
Mark Huffer, KCATA General Manager

P.S. 2012 Metro ridership is up nearly 20 percent the first two months of the year! This momentum sets the stage for Metro2012.

Streetcar Public Meetings: May 15, 16, 17

Posted on: May 03, 2012 - 01:04 PM
Effective: May 15, 2012

You’re Invited: KC Streetcar 101 Public Meetings

Now is the time to get an update on the KC Downtown Streetcar project, learn how it would operate, and talk with project team members about how construction effects can be minimized. We want to hear your thoughts at the upcoming public meetings!

Join us for one of three open house public meetings featuring brief presentations at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 pm.
Tuesday, May 15, 4 - 7 pm,  Kansas City Public Library - Downtown Branch, (Across from the 10th & Main MetroCenter) Helzberg Auditorium, 14 W 10th Street, Kansas City, MO 64105

Wednesday, May 16, 4 - 7 pm, Steamboat Arabia Museum, (Near 3rd & Grand Park-and-Ride and MAX station) Atrium, 400 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64106

Thursday, May 17, 4 - 7 pm, Union Station, Arthur Stilwell Room, (C-Level near Grand Gallery), 30 West Pershing Rd., Kansas City, MO 64108

How will KC Downtown Streetcar work?

A 2-mile starter line for a modern Streetcar has been proposed to run on Main Street from the River Market on the north, through the Central Business District and the Crossroads areas, to Union Station and Crown Center on the south. It would run in an existing street lane and other vehicles could still use that lane.  It would operate seven days a week. Stops would be located every two blocks with streetcars arriving approximately every 10 minutes in each direction.
The City is working closely with downtown stakeholders on governance issues, such as: who will operate/maintain the Streetcar, how decisions will be made during and after construction, fare policy, and numerous other topics.  A mayoral committee is being formed to help structure a legal framework over the next several months.

Has everything been decided?

Not at all. The team is fleshing out the details of the route (e.g., which lane the streetcar will run in, specific stop locations, site for a vehicle maintenance facility, effects on traffic/parking, etc.).  Current concept drawings will be available at the public meetings.
Issues such as noise and vibration along with traffic and construction effects are being investigated so they can be minimized or mitigated.  Now is the time to talk with project members so we can consider and incorporate your suggestions during the engineering phase.

How will construction affect me?

Building a streetcar line is different from building a road or even light-rail transit.  Construction will be completed in segments (perhaps 2 – 3 blocks at a time), and the City will work with business owners and residents along the route to minimize disruptions.  Photos of typical streetcar construction will be displayed at the public meetings.

How will the Streetcar be funded?

The City applied for $25 million in federal funds (TIGER grant) in March; announcements of grant winners are expected to be made by early June. A Transportation Development District (TDD) is being considered by downtown voters to help pay a portion of the costs through property assessments, sales tax and other sources. The Jackson County Circuit Court approved sending the question to the voters in the District, and a mail-in vote on the formation of the TDD will occur over the summer.  Details of the TDD proposal, as well as applications required to obtain a mail-in ballot, will be available at the public meetings.

What’s the schedule?

Construction is expected to begin in mid- to late 2013, and to be completed by late 2014. Opening day is expected by mid-2015.

Metro Riders: Be Prepared For Severe Weather

Posted on: Mar 12, 2012 - 02:40 PM
Effective: Mar 12, 2012

Spring in Kansas City brings the chance of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the region. During most storms, your travel on The Metro will not be affected.

However, Kansas City may experience severe storms or tornado warnings. In the most severe storms or during a tornado warning in the immediate area of your Metro bus, the bus operator will give you directions about safety.  The Metro’s dispatch office will be in contact with bus operators during severe weather.

If the conditions are severe enough, the operator will tell customers to get off the bus and find a safe building to seek shelter.  If shelter is not available, it is recommended that customers lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area. Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

In the event of a tornado warning, please do not use Metro bus shelters instead of finding shelter in a building.

The Metro will post updates about bus service during an emergency at http://www.kcata.org and on Twitter, at http://www.twitter.com/kcatametro. The Call Center may be unavailable in an emergency if KCATA employees are evacuated from offices.

Regular Metro service will resume as soon as the area is safe.

About the Comprehensive Service Analysis

In an effort to improve service, meet ridership demands and operate more efficiently using existing resources, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) has developed service change recommendations for more than 50 Metro bus routes. In late 2011, KCATA sought and reviewed customer comments about the proposals. The initial recommendations are available for review online. Service changes are scheduled to begin in April 2012 and phased in throughout 2012.

Customer participation has been important in developing the final route recommendations. KCATA received more than 500 comments through a series of seven public forums, mail, online and phone.

The recommendations are the result of findings related to the Comprehensive Service Analysis (CSA), conducted by Nelson Nygaard, a national firm that specializes in transit planning and conducting CSAs for transit agencies. The CSA extensively evaluated transit services KCATA currently operates in Kansas City, Mo. Phase I of the study was three-fold:

  1. Customers were asked to participate in a preference survey conducted online and on board buses in the fall of 2010 to understand priorities and preferences for different types of service, and when and where service should be available. Results of the preference survey are available online (PDF format).
  2. The market analysis examined conditions and developments in Kansas City such as population shifts, employment and local travel patterns that have had an impact on transit services. The market analysis and a summary presentation are available online in PDF format.
  3. Standards and criteria were established to assess how to best design and determine transit service levels so that service better matches demand. The service guidelines are available online (PDF format).
